Silver Compounds

Silver compounds are among the fundamental materials used in many historical photographic processes. The most important of these is silver nitrate (AgNO₃), used for preparing light-sensitive layers and silver baths.

In the wet collodion process, silver nitrate is used to sensitize the collodion-coated plate and form light-sensitive silver halides.

In salted paper printing, it is used to sensitize previously salted paper, creating the light-sensitive material on which the photographic image is formed during exposure.

In albumen printing, silver nitrate reacts with halides present in the albumen layer, producing the light-sensitive silver compounds responsible for image formation.

Because of their high reactivity and sensitivity to light, silver compounds require proper storage, accurate measuring and careful handling in accordance with the procedures of the specific photographic process.
