Foam rollers are a practical tool for applying emulsion evenly in the gum bichromate process. They make it easy to spread a prepared mixture of gum arabic, pigment and sensitizer over the surface of the paper, creating a thin and even coating.

In practice, they work much better than many standard art rollers. The soft foam adapts well to the paper surface, makes it easier to control the amount of emulsion being applied, and helps reduce visible roller marks.

Another important advantage is the replaceable foam head. When the foam wears out, there is no need to replace the entire roller — only the foam head needs to be changed. The handle can be reused many times, making this a practical and economical solution, especially for regular gum printing.
