Canson Student A4+ – Paper for Cyanotype and Historical Photographic Processes, 50 Sheets

Canson Student A4+ is an acid-free art paper originally intended for painting techniques such as watercolour, gouache and acrylic. Thanks to its structure, absorbency and resistance to wet processing, it can also be used for historical and alternative photographic processes.

Unlike specialist photographic papers, Canson Student was not developed specifically for light-sensitive photographic processes. However, it is an affordable paper that allows photographers to make test prints, experiment and produce photographs without immediately having to use more expensive cotton-based papers.

We regularly use Canson Student in our own photographic darkroom, particularly during workshops, when teaching historical photographic processes and when making prints. Our knowledge of its properties comes from practical experience, and we regard it as a useful paper for both educational work and independent photographic experimentation.

Properties Relevant to Alternative Photographic Processes

  • Acid-free cellulose-based paper – an art paper designed for use with water-based media.

  • Resistance to wet processing – suitable for processes involving wetting and washing photographic prints.

  • Paper absorbency – allows the manual application of sensitising solutions, although the degree of penetration depends on the formulation and coating method.

  • Two surfaces with different textures – allow the choice of paper surface to suit the technique and intended visual effect.

  • Affordable price – makes it possible to produce more test prints and experiment without using more expensive specialist papers.

Two Sides of the Paper – Different Working Characteristics

Canson Student has two sides with slightly different surface characteristics.

The lightly textured side can be used for applying sensitising solutions by hand with a brush or coating roller. The paper texture remains visible in the finished print and can contribute to its visual character.

The smoother side provides a more even image surface and may be preferable when reproducing fine details.

We recommend testing both sides before starting a larger project, as their behaviour depends on the photographic process, the sensitising solution and the method of application.

Applications in Historical Photographic Processes

Canson Student can be used for various photographic processes, particularly for learning and producing test prints.

Cyanotype

The paper is suitable for cyanotype printing using both analogue and digital negatives. It can also be used for prints intended for subsequent toning and for experimenting with multiple applications of sensitiser.

Van Dyke Brown

Canson Student can be used for Van Dyke brown printing, a process based on the light sensitivity of iron and silver compounds. Before producing a larger series of prints, it is advisable to test how the paper behaves during coating, washing and fixing.

Salted Paper and Albumen Printing

The paper can serve as a support for experiments with salted paper and albumen printing. Both processes require appropriate surface preparation, which should be adapted to the specific formulation.

Gum Bichromate Printing

Canson Student can be used for gum bichromate printing, particularly when working with a limited number of layers. For more complex multi-layer prints, we recommend preparing the paper in advance, including pre-shrinking and appropriate gelatin sizing, to reduce dimensional changes during successive wet processing stages.

Paper for Learning and Workshop Use

Canson Student is a practical choice for learning historical photographic processes and carrying out independent experiments. Its affordable price allows a greater number of prints to be produced without having to use more expensive specialist papers.

In our darkroom, we use it primarily during workshops, for teaching the manual application of sensitising solutions and for making prints using various historical photographic techniques.

The paper is suitable for both initial experiments and more advanced work with alternative photographic processes when its properties match the intended result.

A4+ Format

The A4+ format provides additional working space compared with a standard A4 sheet. It allows prints to be made with margins for coating and subsequent mounting or framing.
