Puddle Pusher – 13.5 cm Glass Coating Rod for Alternative Photographic Processes
The Puddle Pusher is a glass coating rod designed for the even application of light-sensitive solutions to paper. It helps create a uniform coating across the entire sheet, reducing the risk of streaks and uneven coverage.
When used correctly, it can also significantly reduce the amount of sensitising solution required, which is particularly important when working with expensive processes such as platinum and palladium printing.
What paper sizes can it be used for?
The coating rod is 13.5 cm long and is particularly suitable for working with smaller sheets of paper, including:
-
4 × 5 in,
-
13 × 18 cm.
Which photographic processes is it suitable for?
The Puddle Pusher is ideal for applying liquid light-sensitive solutions used in processes including:
-
cyanotype,
-
platinum and palladium printing,
-
salted paper printing,
-
Van Dyke Brown,
-
other alternative and historical photographic processes requiring an even application of a liquid sensitising solution.
The Puddle Pusher is not suitable for coating gum bichromate emulsions.
Why use a glass coating rod?
Unlike a brush, the Puddle Pusher does not absorb the sensitising solution. It allows the liquid to be distributed evenly across the surface of the paper while reducing the amount of solution retained by the coating tool.
This is particularly valuable when working with processes that use expensive precious-metal salts, where efficient use of the sensitising solution can reduce the cost of making each print.
