Carta Eterna A4+ 95 gsm (pack of 10 sheets) is a high-quality paper made from 100% cotton cellulose, particularly well suited to cyanotype printing. Its key features are a neutral pH and the absence of an alkaline buffer, which is commonly found in many watercolor and printmaking papers.
Alkaline buffering is generally beneficial for the long-term stability of paper, but in cyanotype it can negatively affect both image intensity and permanence. Carta Eterna contains no alkaline buffer, helping to provide stable and repeatable results in this process.
Properties particularly important for cyanotype:
Carta Eterna has been tested by us in the traditional cyanotype process as well as in toning. It produces rich, well-saturated images with very good contrast and does not show the loss of image intensity that can occur with some buffered papers during processing.
-
Neutral pH – 7.0 – the paper contains no alkaline buffer and is therefore very well suited to the chemistry used in traditional cyanotype.
-
100% cotton cellulose – provides good durability and mechanical strength.
-
Smooth, untextured surface – supports sharp edges, fine detail and even tonal transitions.
-
Medium absorbency – slightly lower than that of typical watercolor papers. The sensitizing solution remains close to the paper surface, helping to produce excellent sharpness and image intensity. At the same time, the paper is sufficiently absorbent to accept an adequate amount of sensitizer while limiting pigment loss during processing.
-
Natural white, without optical brighteners – the paper’s colour comes from the natural whiteness of the cotton fibres rather than from optical brightening agents. As a result, its appearance is stable and does not depend on fluorescent whitening additives.
-
Very good resistance to wet processing – the paper withstands long and repeated water baths, including washing and toning, while retaining sufficient mechanical strength when wet.
-
Good dimensional stability after drying – despite its relatively low grammage, the paper dries freely with only minor surface deformation.
Recommended applications:
Carta Eterna is particularly suitable for:
-
traditional cyanotype,
-
cyanotype toning,
-
photomechanical processes, including oil transfer printing,
-
printmaking techniques such as woodcut.
We do not recommend this paper for silver-based processes such as salted paper printing.
