The basic cyanotype chemical kit from Alternative Photographic Supplies is intended for preparing the two separate solutions used in the cyanotype process.
The chemicals should be dissolved separately in demineralised water:
-
chemicals for Solution A – in 50 ml of demineralised water,
-
chemicals for Solution B – in 50 ml of demineralised water.
Once prepared, Solutions A and B should be stored separately, in dark bottles, away from light. Immediately before use, equal amounts of Solution A and Solution B are mixed together. The resulting light-sensitive solution is then applied to paper or another suitably prepared surface.
The kit is sufficient for approximately 40–60 A4 prints, depending on the type of surface and the method used to apply the solution.
What does the kit include?
-
chemicals for preparing 50 ml of Solution A,
-
chemicals for preparing 50 ml of Solution B,
-
instructions and practical guidance for working with the cyanotype process.
Demineralised water and dark storage bottles are not included in the kit.
Preparing the solutions
Each part of the kit should be dissolved separately in 50 ml of demineralised water. Once prepared, Solutions A and B should be stored in separate dark bottles.
To coat the paper, prepare only the amount of light-sensitive solution needed at the time by mixing Solution A and Solution B in a 1:1 ratio.
Exposing cyanotype prints
Cyanotype prints can be exposed:
-
under a UV lamp,
-
in sunlight.
When using sunlight, exposure time depends on the season, weather conditions and UV intensity. In Poland, working outdoors is usually easiest during the spring and summer months, when UV levels are generally higher.
Who is this kit for?
The kit is suitable both for first experiments with cyanotype and for workshop or educational use.
Preparing the solutions yourself also gives a better understanding of the complete process – from mixing the chemistry and coating the paper to exposure, washing and the finished print.
