Restoring functionality to historic equipment

For most of the history of large format photography, glass plates were the primary light-sensitive material. As a result, early plate holders were constructed to accommodate rigid glass plates and were not designed for the use of thin, flexible sheet film.

When sheet film became the standard, manufacturers did not abandon the existing system. Instead, they introduced metal adapter inserts that allowed photographers to use modern film within traditional glass plate holders.
